Kylie Minogue in the music video for the gay club anthem Your Disco Needs You, filmed in Los Angeles under the direction of Todd Cole and released in January of 2001. The video was inspired by the 1934 Warner Bros. musical comedy Dames, which featured the iconic kaleidoscopic choreography of Busby Berkeley. Your Disco Needs You was included on Minogueโs dance-heavy seventh studio album Light Years (released in September of 2000) and rapidly became a fan favorite, charting in the Top 40 in Switzerland, Germany and the singerโs native Australia. Record executives in the UK, however, declined to release the song as a single, declaring it โtoo gayโ and โtoo campโ. Despite this incredibly poor (and morally questionable) decision, the song still managed to chart in the UK on the strength of sales of foreign imports, proving how devoted Kylieโs LGBTQ+ fan base is.
